The latest innovations for cataract surgery include femtosecond laser-created accurate incisions, laser intraoperative refractive measurements for the intraocular lens (IOL) power, and the newest IOL ”lifestyle” lenses. Using the LensSx femtosecond laser, GVSC surgeons program the laser to create the capsulotomy and corneal incisions instead of manually with a blade. The laser can create accurate incisions for the correction of astigmatism with unprecedented precision and predictability. Studies have shown the laser creates perfectly centered capsulotomies making effective lens position more accurate and predictable. This can greatly improve visual outcomes. The laser can also be used to fragment the lens reducing the amount of ultrasound phacoemulsification energy required to remove it which enhances safety.

Using ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) System, our GVSC surgeons can determine the true refractive power of the eye taking real-time measurements during surgery. ORA accurately measures the eye and is invaluable for confirmation of IOL power selection and guiding toric IOL placement. This technology is especially useful for patients who have had previous corneal refractive surgery that complicates accurate IOL selection. ORA helps the GVSC surgeon to more accurately determine the best IOL power before the patient leaves the operating room.
